Livestock Guard Dogs
We were having problems with foxes and coyotes at our farm. After loosing some chickens, we decided it was time to purchase a Livestock Guardian Dog. We did a lot of research about LGD’s and how to raise them.
Our male is from Halcyon Hill here in Michigan. He was raised with his parents and siblings watching over goats, horses, and cattle. He is very gentle with the animals, but is very watchful of his farm.
Our big girl is a purebred Great Pyrenees whom we purchased from Manzinita Lamanchas. She was in charge of poultry and goats. We needed a more experienced LGD to work with our two young LGDs. She took a few months to settle in here, as she missed her people and animals. We spent a lot of time bonding with her and introducing her to her new charges. All of the dogs get along together very well and they each know their job.
Our pups are an excellent cross of Great Pyrenees, Anatolian Shepherd, and a little bit of Akbash. We have puppies available and can help you pick the pup that has the strengths that you need for your specific situation.
Great Pyrenees
Great Pyrenees are the ultimate Guardians. They are a calm, well-mannered, serious dog known for their great devotion to family, and most importantly children. These dogs are incredibly trustworthy, affectionate and gentle, but if the need arises, they will not hesitate to protect their family and their territory.
The Great Pyrenees is a large, thickly coated, and immensely powerful working dog bred to deter sheep-stealing wolves and other predators on snowy mountaintops. Pyr’s today are mellow companions and vigilant guardians of home and family.
Great Pyrenees are guard dogs by instinct, and members of the great family of livestock guardian dogs. Pyrs are not herding dogs, but were bred to be left alone to protect their flock of sheep up in the mountain valleys.
Anatolian Shepherd
The Anatolian Shepherd was bred as a livestock guardian (not a herding dog) and will happily live its life in close contact with sheep, goats, horses, llamas, deer, bison…and most importantly…children.
They are fiercely loyal animals with a high level of intelligence and a very long memory. As a rule, they are very loving and affectionate dogs who respond well to positive reinforcement and are eager to please. But they’re also independent thinkers who may not always come when you call them!
During basic obedience training they are very quick studies if you are patient, loving, consistent and affectionate. We are in the habit of using love and affection as a reward for positive behavior instead of food and recommend that you do so as well.
